Please note that you will be asked to submit the following documents in PDF format:

• your final dissertation or doctoral thesis,
• official proof of the result obtained for this work (transcript, diploma or certificate of completion, thesis report – no screenshots),
• a summary of the work (maximum 1 page), in English, specifying the subject matter, the theoretical and methodological framework, the limitations, conclusions and prospects of the research,
• a summary for the general public (maximum 10 lines), in English, explaining how the research conducted can contribute to thinking about teaching (on educational policies, teaching practices, etc.). This text will enable the jury to assess the work's potential for popularisation. It must establish a link with the objective of the award.
   

To be eligible, the works submitted must:

• be personal, original and unpublished works, and submitted to the Award by their author(s), hereinafter referred to as "the candidate" or "the candidates",
• have been successfully presented and/or defended during the 2024-2025 academic year at a recognised higher education institution in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation,
• for the "Bac" and "Master" Awards, be final-year projects within the meaning of Article 126 of the "Paysage" decree,
• for the "Doc" Award, be doctoral theses within the meaning of Article 71, § 3 of the "Paysage" decree,
• for the "Bac" and "Master" Awards, have obtained a minimum grade of 16/20 (80%), as attested by a transcript, diploma or certificate of completion.

The same person may only submit one application per edition and may only apply once in each award category.

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

The works are evaluated by the jury on the basis of the application files and according to the following criteria:

• the theme addressed and the strength of the link with education, particularly higher education;
• the originality and innovative and forward-looking nature of the subject and/or its treatment,
• the theoretical framework, methodological and scientific rigour,
• the clarity of the arguments and the possibility of popularisation,
• the quality of the analysis and the results obtained.

The following two criteria may also be taken into account, where applicable:

• the potential impact of the work on education in general, and its possible transferability to the Wallonia-Brussels Federation,
• the societal dimension (contribution to social emancipation, sustainable development, improvement of well-being, etc.).
   

With the exception of information regarding the ineligibility of a work under Article 4 of the regulations, no information relating to applications may be disclosed before the selection process has been completed.

The winners selected by the jury will be notified directly by ARES via email.
 

The "Bac" Award, worth €2,000, rewards a final-year project defended in a higher education institution, an art school or a higher education institution for social advancement (short bachelor's degree and specialised bachelor's degree).

The Master's Award, worth €2,000, rewards a final project completed at the end of a postgraduate course at a university, college, art school or higher education institution for social advancement (Master's degree, specialised Master's degree, doctorate, veterinary degree and higher secondary education teaching qualification).

The "Doc" Award, worth €4,000, rewards a doctoral thesis defended with a view to obtaining the academic degree of doctor.

Attention, il vous sera demandé de déposer les documents suivants en PDF :

• le travail de fin d’études ou la thèse de doctorat,

• un résumé du travail (1 page maximum), en français, précisant l’objet traité, le cadre théorique et méthodologique, les limites, conclusions et perspectives de la recherche,
• un résumé de vulgarisation (10 lignes maximum), en français, expliquant ce que la recherche menée peut apporter à la réflexion sur l’enseignement (sur les politiques éducatives, les pratiques pédagogiques, etc.). Ce texte permettra au jury d’évaluer le potentiel de vulgarisation du travail. Il fera obligatoirement le lien avec l’objectif du prix.
   

Pour être éligibles, les travaux présentés doivent :

• être des travaux personnels, originaux et inédits, et présentés au Prix par leur(s) auteur(s), ci-après dénommé·e(s) « le candidat », « la candidate » ou « les candidats »,
• avoir été présentés et/ou défendus avec succès, lors de l’année académique 2024-2025, dans un établissement d’enseignement supérieur reconnu en Fédération-Wallonie Bruxelles,
• pour les prix « Bac » et « Master », être des travaux de fin d’études au sens de l’article 126 du décret « Paysage »,
• pour le prix « Doc », être des thèses de doctorat au sens de l’article 71, § 3 du décret « Paysage »,
• pour les prix « Bac » et « Master », avoir obtenu au minimum la note de 16/20 (80 %), attestée par un relevé de notes, attestation de diplôme ou de réussite.

Une même personne ne peut présenter qu’une seule candidature par édition et ne peut candidater qu’une seule fois dans chaque catégorie de prix.

Les candidatures tardives ou incomplètes ne seront pas prises en compte.

Les travaux sont évalués par le jury sur la base des dossiers de candidature et selon les critères suivants :

• la thématique abordée et l'intensité du lien avec l'enseignement et en particulier avec l'enseignement supérieur ;
• l’originalité et le caractère novateur et prospectif du sujet et/ou de son traitement,
• le cadre théorique, la rigueur méthodologique et scientifique,
• la clarté des arguments et la possibilité de vulgarisation,
• la qualité d’analyse et les résultats obtenus.

Les deux critères suivants peuvent également, le cas échéant, être mobilisés :

• les retombées potentielles du travail pour l’enseignement en général, et leur éventuelle transposabilité à l’échelle de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles,
• la dimension sociétale (contribution à l'émancipation sociale, au développement durable, à l'amélioration du bien-être, etc.).
   

À l'exception de l'information quant à l'inéligibilité d'un travail au regard de l'article 4 du règlement, aucune information relative aux candidatures ne pourra être donnée avant le terme du processus de sélection.

Les lauréates ou lauréats sélectionnés par le jury sont informés par e-mail directement par l’ARES.
 

Le prix « Bac », d’un montant de 2 000 euros, récompense un travail de fin d’études de 1er cycle défendu dans une formation d’une haute école, d’une école supérieure des arts ou d’un établissement d’enseignement supérieur de promotion sociale (bachelier de type court et bachelier de spécialisation).

Le prix « Master », d’un montant de 2 000 euros, récompense un travail de fin d’études de 2e cycle défendu dans une formation d’une université, haute école, école supérieure des arts ou d’un établissement d’enseignement supérieur de promotion sociale (master, master de spécialisation, médecin, médecin vétérinaire et agrégé de l’enseignement secondaire supérieur).

Le prix « Doc », d’un montant de 4 000 euros, récompense une thèse de doctorat défendue en vue de l’obtention du grade académique de docteur.

The duration of the exchange must be of at least 18 days and of maximum 2 months (60 days), including travel days. This period may be divided in two stays.

The amount of the scholarship awarded to the duo is a sum of €7,000 to be shared between the two partners according to a distribution key set by them in the application form (for example, €3,500 per person). This amount is intended to cover international mobility and per diem expenses. Any excess costs not already covered by the ASEM-DUO scholarship may be covered by other funding (private or institutional).

Documents have to be sent in ONE single PDF document by the FWB institution applying, at asem-duo@ares-ac.be:

• The application form of the current call for the Wallonia-Brussels Mobility Scholarship Programme duly completed by both candidates. The form must be typewritten and submitted in PDF format. Authenticated electronic signatures of PDF documents are allowed;
• A copy of the academic cooperation agreement (Memorandum of Understanding) between paired institutions or, in the absence of MoU, a declaration of intent, i.e. a letter co-signed (or two separate letters signed) by the authorities of the two institutions, or their representatives, mentioning the intention of both parties to sign an inter-institutional agreement within the next two years;
• The passport copies of the two applicants;
• The resume of no more than 5 pages for each applicant, emphasising work experience relevant to the ASEM-DUO programme.

No application will be accepted if it does not include all the elements requested before the deadline for submitting applications.

The applicants must meet all the following eligibility requirements: 

• applications should be submitted by a pair of academic or scientific staff from higher education institutions, one of whom is from from the FWB, and the other one from one of the Asia-Pacific countries covered by the programme;
• the Asia-Pacific institution must be located in one of the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam;
• candidates must be remunerated by their respective institutions and it must be their main occupation (full or part-time (min. 50%)). Priority will be given to candidates whose position within the institution extends for a minimum of three years;
• the Wallonia-Brussels and Asian-Pacific higher education institutions must be recognised or accredited by the competent authorities in the field of higher education;
• the Wallonia-Brussels and Asian-Pacific higher education institutions must sign a cooperation agreement (MoU) or must have expressed the intention to sign one in the two following years;
• the call is open to all disciplines. The two members of the duo do not have to belong to the same disciplines;
• the citizenship of the candidate is not a criterion for eligibility.

The following groups are not entitled for a scholarship: 

• students and PhD students,
• professors emeritus and honorary,
• teaching assistants.

Exemptions are possible for the colleges of arts. The selection committee will assess on a case-by-case basis.

The exchange must necessarily take place between the two same institutions, but does not need to take place in the same time span, nor between two identical departments.

A candidate may submit several applications, with different partners. In the event of multiple applications in the same year, a maximum of one application per candidate may be potentially selected, i.e. the one that obtains the highest score from the jury. A duo may apply no more than twice for the same project and may receive ASEM-DUO FWB funding no more than once for the same project.

If a candidate has already received other funding via the FWB ASEM-DUO programme, he/she must expressly mention this on the application form (type of funding, purpose, partner, year). Candidates who have received an ASEM-DUO scholarship within the past three years will be given lower priority.

If a candidate has already received funding for this project (from ARES or any other organisation), they must explicitly mention it in the application form (type of funding, purpose, partner, year). They should also clearly explain how an ASEM-DUO scholarship complements this funding.

ARES selects beneficiaries of the ASEM-DUO Wallonia Brussels Fellowship Programme based on the following criteria: 

• the impact of the exchange on the development or strengthening of ties between the higher education institution in the FWB and the institution in the Asia-Pacific region. Since the ASEM-DUO program aims to establish and enhance collaborations between institutions in the FWB and the Asia-Pacific region, applications demonstrating significant potential for developing collaboration between partner institutions will be given higher priority;
• the level of internationalisation of the project, i.e. opportunities for developing collaborations that go beyond the project itself (international collaboration opportunities, network development, long-term impact of the internationalisation project, diversity of beneficiaries (students, faculty, scientific or administrative staff), etc.);
• the scientific, academic or artistic quality of the applicants (e.g. publications, publications with the partner institution, research or artistic project, exhibitions, work experience, competitions, academic background, etc.);
• the complementarity of the projects submitted between the members of the duo (if the projects are different). The fact that the application involves two different projects is not restrictive; however, the complementarity of the projects is considered an added value for the evaluation of the applications;
• the explanation for the duration of the trip of each applicant.

There are 5 universities, 19 university colleges and 16 schools of arts and 81 adult higher education institutions in the FWB. The full list of higher education institutions eligible is available on Study in Belgium website.

If you already have a partner, you must then check that he or she actually works for an eligible higher education institution of the FWB and meets the conditions of eligibility.

If you do not have a partner yet, you can inquire with the international relations office of your institution to find out whether your institution already has a partnership with a higher education institution in the FWB. Alternatively, you can check on Study in Belgium website the list of higher education institutions dealing with areas related to your project and contact, for instance, the head of international relations office, the head of the research department, or the heads of faculty/department of these institutions.

ARES is cannot help you find a partner to work with on your project.

You have two options regarding signatures: either the document is signed by hand and then scanned, or you save the completed form in PDF format and you and your authorities affix your authenticated signatures to it.

Yes, you can split your stay in two trips in order to meet, after your second trip, the minimum length of stay of 18 days in total. However, in this case, we draw your attention on the fact that most of your scholarship will be spent in transportation fees.

As a reminder, the stay of each of the partners in the duo must last for a minimum of 18 days and a maximum of 60 days.

The definitive dates of your stay must be sent to ARES by September 30th of the reference year of the call at the latest.

Yes, you can change your travel dates up to one month after the deadline for signing the agreement between you, your partner and ARES, i.e. until September 30th of the reference year of the call.

This is a co-signed letter (or two separate signed letters) from the authorities of both institutions, or their representatives, stating the intention of both parties to sign an inter-institutional agreement within the next 2 years. The relevant authorities are either the rectorate or directorate, or the vice-rectorate responsible for academic affairs.
