01/ Objectives
This one-year master program (60 ECTS) proposes an integrated approach of health risks at the interface between human, animal and environment. This approach fits into the One Health concept, as promoted by the WHO-OIE-FAO tripartite, aiming at interdisciplinary collaborations to tackle complex health problems in a rapidly changing world.
Organized around five main practical topics applied to emerging and developing countries of the Global South, learning activities centrally aim at fostering this needed interdisciplinarity, combining scientific, communicational, managerial and attitudinal skills. These activities integrate basic as well as advanced aspects of collective management of health, with multiple perspectives from public health, veterinary, environmental, social and economic sciences, within a continued ethical thinking. Practical exercises further allow for the development of a range of technical skills, covering field skills, lab skills, and modeling skills.
02/ Training content
Learning activities are organized around five practical topics, as follows:
- Antimicrobial resistance and drug management,
- Zoonotic diseases (emerging, re-emerging and neglected),
- Food security and food safety,
- Health and land use planning,
- Ecosystem perturbations and health risks.
These themes will be explored across a diversity of activities, consisting of seminars, practical exercises, role-play and simulations, debates, and personal works, gathered under the following course titles:
Basic and transversal tools
- Methodological bases in qualitative and quantitative data analysis – 1 ECTS
- Conceptual frameworks of interdisciplinarity in health management – 1 ECTS
- Introduction to information literacy and critical appraisal of scientific literature – 1 ECTS
Collective health management
- Animal production in the Global South and its health, social and environmental impacts – 3 ECTS
- Biosecurity: a pillar of prevention strategies of zoonoses in the Global South – 2 ECTS
- Food security in developing countries, from the individual to the population – 1 ECTS
- Antimicrobial resistance: causes and public management – 3 ECTS
- Management of sanitary crisis and infection control in low resource settings – 1 ECTS
Medical, veterinary and epidemiological aspects
- Pathology of animal diseases, including zoonoses, in the Global South – 2 ECTS
- Food-related health risks management – 3 ECTS
- Animal diseases with an impact on human health in the Global South – 3 ECTS
- Health risks at the interface between human and ecosystems, including wild and domestic animals – 3 ECTS
- Veterinary epidemiology and risk analysis – 1 ECTS
- Modeling techniques and advanced statistical analysis in health – 1 ECTS
Social sciences
- Socio-economics of animal and public health in the Global South – 3 ECTS
- Participatory approaches in health management in the Global South – 2 ECTS
- Cultural anthropology applied to health issues' integrated management in the Global South – 2 ECTS
- Ethical issues in health management in the Global South – 1 ECTS
The program includes a master thesis, coupled to a field training of 2 months. Ideally, this training will take place in another country than the candidate’s country of origin, and will be conducted in association between 2 students. The field training and thesis represent a volume of 20 ECTS. The topics tackled through field training may cover field applications, scientific investigations, in-depth expertise reports, project identification and formulation, or acquisition of a professional experience outside of the primary field of expertise of the candidate. Although the topic of fieldwork will have to be established in the first part of the academic year in concertation with the students, teachers and external partners, candidates are invited to submit a personal project within their application to the ARES-CCD to express their own area and approaches of interest.
03/ Conditions of admission
Are eligible the holders of diplomas in human medicine or veterinary medicine. Any other diploma that may be considered equivalent may be accepted upon decision of the program’s board. Equivalence will be judged based on the detailed description of the followed curricula. Any request for admission must be motivated by a statement of purpose and a description of the professional project of the candidate. A significant field experience is valued in the selection process.
